URBAQUANTUM – Urban Water Management Platform

Domains: Water / Smart City / Urban Resilience
Programme: Horizon Europe – Cluster 6 “Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment”
Duration: 01/01/2024 – 31/12/2027
Coordinator: CyRIC
Project website: https://urbaquantum.eu

In a nutshell

UrbaQuantum introduces an integrated and innovative approach to monitor and manage urban water quality. The project develops new sensors (pathogens, microplastics, emerging contaminants), models to better manage wastewater overflows, and an Urban Water Management Platform to strengthen the resilience of urban water systems.

EGM’s role in the project

Role: Leader of the Urban Water Management Platform development
Key contributions:

  • Integration of sensors and digital models (digital twins)

  • Development of a decision-support system for operators and public authorities

  • Risk prevention through scenario simulation and root cause analysis

  • Interoperability and architecture based on Twin·Picks

Description

With growing environmental and health pressures, cities must improve monitoring of their water resources. UrbaQuantum brings together a multidisciplinary consortium to:

  • Develop a new generation of sensors capable of detecting pathogens, microplastics, and emerging pollutants;

  • Model sewer network performance to better anticipate overflows;

  • Provide a unified digital platform combining real-time data, predictive models, and digital twins.

This platform will enable operators and policymakers to simulate different scenarios, anticipate risks, and strengthen urban resilience against climate, health, and environmental challenges.

Expected results

  • New sensors for monitoring urban water quality

  • Predictive models and digital twins for network management

  • An open, interoperable Urban Water Management Platform

  • Innovative methods for risk analysis and decision-making

  • Publications, open deliverables, and policy recommendations
